A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.

The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
