Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
