Our Premier Album of 2025: The Artist's Lux Takes the Number One Spot.

At first glance, this album may look more like a challenging university quiz rather than a new popular music album from an artist whose last single was a collaboration with an international K-pop star. Divided into 4 separate movements and voiced in thirteen languages, we have a head-spinning orchestral-influenced work exploring female mystery, spiritual ascent, and bodily change, often through the prism of various female saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme treated with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—is launched heavenward on this record, buoyed by the lush sound of a major symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter among a vast roll call of collaborators. The pure audacity alone renders the efforts of contemporary artists appear rather small.

Transcending Scholarly Exercise

That Lux manages to avoid overly academic chin-stroking is nearly a miracle, with complete praise going to Rosalía. Although this is not the first time album to alchemize historical sounds with the present, the scale feel much greater here, with the tightrope walk more pronounced. What really elevates her fourth release, outside of its multilayered tunes, dense arrangements, and inherent drama, is a core spirit of playfulness. Similar to the legendary Björk during her peak, there is a captivating quality to Rosalía's voice which sweeps you into its whirlwind. When she's breaking hearts apart, you nevertheless desire to be right there through the journey.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

That playful spirit shines brightly on the stunning piano-led ballad about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy over more than four moments. Then, everything drops silent, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh followed by a comment prior to a comically exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes down with cartoonish force. The song then shifts into the frenetic track driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a surprise role from the artist Björk.

"The charm of this album lies in the listener never quite know—nor wish to predict—where it is going next."

Almost every track finishes at a completely different point than how it began. One moment examines the fleeting nature of celebrity with a featherlight orchestration before disintegrating in electronic chaos. Another, a song that recalls the artist's previous rhythmic work begins out moody and brooding, with prowling vocals, before fluttering traditional rhythms and an angelic chorus enter to smooth its rough corners.

The Balance Between Experiment & Accessibility

A key achievement on Lux involves navigating the line between bold innovation and mainstream appeal. It is little surprise that the album has become the artist's first release to crack the upper reaches of major charts: its heart contains a collection of utterly undeniable hits. A song sung entirely in the English language builds around a refrain that seems to collect increasingly nagging melodies while it spins skyward. That feat gets echoed by a different expansive track that expands and constricts, weaving multiple tunes as an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused number seduces via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it shares the cultural honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, lambasting an ex- lover described as an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing have a painted-on smile, akin to a fairy-tale character concealing a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

Lux represents pop on a maximalist scale, a hungry reach for capital-A artistry amid of looming artificial sameness. It rejects solipsism in favor of sublime elevation, creating an over-the-top drama that skillfully controls its inherent excess. This is a deep well of buried gems that requires time to completely explore but doesn't feels like a chore. While some big releases of 2025 felt like a meager scraps, this record is a sumptuous banquet where the characters around the table, perhaps tipsy on holy wine, flit from discussions about ancient saints, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering grief, and shared stories about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from pop's most restlessly inventive visionary.
